What goes great with breastfeeding? Chiropractic care!!!!
Breastfeeding like chiropractic is natural. However, just like chiropractic there is more to it than meets the eye.
Did you know that breastfeeding requires the intricate coordination of muscles and movement. In fact breastfeeding incorporates:
22 bones at 34 sutures
60 voluntary and involuntary muscles
6 of the 12 cranial nerves
Dysfunction and/or misalignment(subluxation) to the above can create breast feeding issues.
The dysfunction or subluxations can be the result of biomechanical injuries during pregnancy or birth. The baby’s positioning in the womb and/or birth trauma can alter the spine, cranium and jaw.
If the the mother has a misalignment (subluxation) of the pelvis., it can interfere with the baby’s ability to attain the optimal positioning. This will cause intrauterine constraint. Another risk is compression on nerves, joints and cranial bones occurring with this alteration in positioning. This can affect feeding.
Common indicators of difficulty with breastfeeding are:
Babies who cannot latch firmly/weak latch
Babies who can latch and not sustain sucking/popping off
Babies who frequently gag at breast
Babies who can feed in only one position/prefer one breast
Babies who remain fussy and distressed throughout the day
Babies who chomp and damage the mother’s nipples
Babies who may not feed any better with assistive devices
Gentle chiropractic care works to restore the body's proper functioning, so that breastfeeding can be effective and enjoyable for both mom and baby.
